On Monday 15th April at 2:38 pm, a video coverage
showed that while every person turned toward an explosion in shock and terror,
many ran in opposite directions in fear for their lives. One young man named
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev looked towards the explosion and then quickly walked away from
the direction of the finish line in Boston Sports marathon. The Tsarnaev
brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar were exposed by the role of video surveillance. A
high tech system called “brief cans” was used to analyze local surveillance
video of this incident and experts were able to capture suspicious acts. United
States have installed videos and other sensors since recent attacks on their
country such as the Pentagon 2001. The incident has made international news and
public discussions worldwide.
But how many people have thought about where the
high tech system “brief cans” technology originated from? Which country invented
this high class quality technology surveillance that was able to “zoom into”
every detail of the two boys who appeared suspicious to the police investigators
in the Boston bombing?
Israel has invented quite a lot of technology that
has helped the technological economy of United States. Yossi Joseph Vardi is the
chairman of the International Technologies of Israel. Mr. Vardi’s son along with
another friend created the ICQ the world’s first instant messaging service. AOL
then bought it from them for four hundred million dollars. With continued
development, Israelis included new technologies such as bomb sniffing mice,
scanners that allow individuals to keep their shoes on during security checks at
the airport and software that prevents identity theft. Other technologies
include the flash drive, flip top cellphones, smartphones, i phones, intel
Pentium chip and much more. American companies have also purchased Israeli start
ups such as “Waze” which is an Israeli smart phone app that gives live traffic
jam based on one’s location. Google bought the programme “Waze” for just under a
billion dollars.Evolution of social media

T&T digital mobile apps
Trinidad and Tobago has built on its existing strengths over the years through
its entertainment, food, fashion, art, craft, Carnival and other expressions of
culture. But for musicians to develop their talents, creative minds from a small
company has come up with ideas for potential marketers to promote apps
globally.
Digital Business Ltd, a management and technology
consulting company has come up with a digital pan, a mobile app that puts an
interactive steelpan in the palm of your hand. Digital pan allows you to
virtually play the traditional steelpan. The digital pan mobile app allows the
image of a pan to be seen on any tablet device. By touching the spot on the
image a musical note is produced. The app is a teaching tool endorsed by Pan
Trinbago. It showcases the names of notes from High C Tenor to Junior pan. It
allows the individuals to play as many as ten notes at the same time.
It is available on all mobile platforms and
composers and arrangers can record tracks instantly on their devices. The
Digital Pan app was launched in November 2011 and so far already many have
downloaded the apps across the world.
Diwali Deeya is another app. According to CEO,
Quinten Questel, “the app was ranked by MSN India as the number (1) one Diwali
app on android and the number (3) three app on iOS worldwide.” Other apps
include Tassa app and other musical instruments.
Great Trini Media Personalities
Some will aspire greatness and become living
legends. Others will aspire but never be remembered in history. Only few great
men and women can leave a legacy behind them. True character will speak of
itself.
Hazel Ward- Redman, (also known as
Aunty Hazel) famous television personality and most known for hosting the Twelve
and Under television programme. She was the first weather anchor on Trinidad
and Tobago Television (TTT) in 1962. She also hosted Teen Talent and other art
themed programmes. She was ailing for a while and passed away at age 79 on the
27th October 2014.
Allyson Hennesy, Veteran

ways of honouring her contribution to the media field. She was known as the
presenter of evening news, co hosting Community Dateline and one of the best mid
morning news and feature programs on television in Trinidad. Unfortunately, at
age 63 this female icon died due to illness.
Keith Smith, is one of Trinidad and
Tobago’s impacting and influential journalists, who had a column entitled “The
Keith Smith Column” and remembered as Express Newspapers Editor-at-Large. He was
an exemplar to journalists in terms of his writing skills, his prose, ability to
relate to all people at all levels and culture and present views with fairness
and balance. He died on February 8, 2011 at age 65.
Keisha David, 29 year old former TV6
reporter and Communication Specialist was well known for taking on any
challenging assignment. She interviewed passersby early in the morning on
Independence Square outside Express House and had a desire to have a career in
media. She died on March 8, 2012.
Marcia Henville, Britain born, perished in
fire at her home at Fidelis Heights, St. Augustine. She was known for her
fearless personality and host of CCN TV6 News ‘Point Blank’ programme. She was
also a former news editor at the Trinidad and Tobago Express. She also presented
on Gayelle channel and was involved in movies, theatre and the arts. She was
known as a “voice” to voiceless in our society. Investigations are being
addressed surrounding her death after neighbours heard an argument taking place
in her home and shortly after that they heard a fire explosion. She died on
January 23rd, 2015.The urge to connect
Smartphones devices such as the
iPhone, androids and tablet products are powerful mobile tools used as text
communication for business productivity through downloadable apps. This
continued evolution will continue and already it has been exploited by
employees. Ninety (90%) of all companies utilize social media for business
purpose inorder to improve organization to internal and external clients.
Organizations have agreed that it helps improve communication internally among
employees and upper management. On the other hand, personal activity on worktime
such as whatsapp posting, instagram posting, tweeting and texting are actually
causing problems in offices. The line between using social media as a medium for work purposes and using social media for personal activity has been a challenge for users of social media during their work or school hours. Some lecturers are convinced that it is a bit distracting when students use social media during class hours.

Some bosses complain that during meetings, employees are an their phone checking out facebook and not being fully attentive to the speaker.

However, some employees can still get the job done while engaging in social media for personal activity while others may never get the job or task at hand completed. Sadly, some workplaces have decided to block social media or put restrictions on certain sites at offices. But, according to Frances Correia, Microsoft’s Trinidad and Tobago Country Manager, he says a “restriction on personal devices will not work.”

Bosses should develop better policies as to treat with social media connectivity. Instead of totally banning social media sites, employees should set out guidelines to help employees with their “urges”.

FB-inter-view
Would you like something you did on Facebook as a public social media removed
forever? As you know anything a person publishes on Facebook is public knowledge
for life whether it is good or bad? There is no law to stop an employer from
looking up a person or even asking a person to share their Facebook account
information so that they could make a decision about hiring you.
Is this is a good thing or bad thing?
In my opinion, I believe this unethical.
Once a person’s page is open, the employee can Facebook interview them without their knowing. They can categorize them by their race, personality, how friendly they are, what they enjoy looking at, what amuses them, where they probably went to school and where they currently work, if the information posted is accurate. After looking at publicly available photos, status updates, wall post-conversations then employees are reviewing content by face-booking or “interview stalking.” But images cannot determine who a person really is or what their real intentions are?
Most people create impressions of their digital real selves. Sometimes individuals use these social media sites without critically thinking what they are posting.
Can these errors or posts be erased completely? It is impossible to fully erase unwanted social media posts. Companies can delete posts from their databases as well as hack into person’s accounts even if their accounts are on private settings. Whatever is posted on the internet especially Facebook, even if you deleted the conversation it remains in the archived. There are proposed laws in California that are now looking into erasing social media posts so that juvenile delinquents who posted “bad” things on the internet can have a clean slate in the future.

Social media purge

My very first post. My very first experience
with social media fast. How did it go? Difficult in the beginning, but I
survived. Instead of using my phone to send messages, I simply called my friends
and spoke to them. It was not as bad as thought . I found that my communication
on telephone were of more substance and importance than my regular interactions
on Facebook.
So having no access to emails was not bad. Some
of my friends begged me to go on skype, I reiterated that I was on a social
media fast for three days. I even asked them if they could handle such a
challenge. To my surprise, many of them said yes, they had
alternatives.
Because it was the beginning of the semester,
there were no immediate emails to worry about. In addition, I was not going to
miss Facebook. Usually, I check my Facebook account every two days as a measure
of not becoming addicted. In order to contact family members, I simply told
them where I was and if any emergency arises that I would call them
immediately.
So I survived the three -day fast
with no panic attacks. I missed no one desperately, and when I had checked all
my accounts, all messages were simply based around “Hi keish, how are you? inbox
me when u get a chance!”
